Strawberry Picking

I love a Strawberry, but don’t you think British ones taste the best? They have that really sweet juicy sunshine filled strawberry taste that makes you question if you’re actually eating something healthy. Ok so you could just nip down to your local supermarket and pick up a punnet but where’s the fun in that. Make healthy eating fun and head down to your local pick your own.

We are based in Sussex so headed to New House Farm Shop. Location Faygate, Horsham, RH12 4RU. Not only is there a massive strawberry picking field there is a cafe with some very delicious cakes, as well as a fully stocked farm shop.

Priced at just over £4 per kilo I did think they were a little over priced but that said you got to pick the exact shapes and sizes and be as fussy as you like. I’m sure they also like to cover the fact that there was definitely one or two eaten during the picking. Come on everyone does it.

Recipe

The question is what do you do with all those strawberries once you’ve picked them. I’m a fan of them on their own, on top of my porridge or on top of some yoghurt. If you have a few spare minutes you can make them into a simple tasty pudding.

Whip double cream, add a little sprinkle of icing sugar, crumble in some meringues and chuck in a few chopped up strawberries.

Layer up in a jar, strawberries, cream mix, strawberries, cream mix and stick half a strawberry on top to make it look pretty. It’s super easy and tastes delicious.

Thoughts

Although I do think a super market is slightly cheaper it’s good to support a local business. It’s a trip out and a fun way to add more fruit into your diet and up your 5 a day.

One comment I will make is make sure you go early enough in the season, some of the strawberries had seen better days. It seemed a shame the farm hadn’t picked them before they got there though.
