Microneedling

Who’s heard of Microneedling? Go on hands up. There is so much chat about what treatments are good for what and so it’s often hard to know what might suit. Microneedling is a clinically proven treatment and can produce some great results with very little down time. So if you’re thinking about investing here’s all you need to know to help you decide if it’s for you.

Benefits / How it works

Microneedling is a collagen induction treatment. The aim of the treatment is to puncture the stratum corneum (top layer of the epidermis) to induce a controlled injury response. Fibroblasts secrete collagen to strengthen the wound. Remodelling occurs to reorganise and realign fibres.

The treatment is great for skin rejuvenation, reducing fine lines and wrinkles. You can achieved a reduction in scaring, including acne scaring, scars and stretch marks. It’s great for mild rosacea (vascular only) and can help to tighten the skin.

So to summarise you are creating controlled trauma to the skin to reproduce and remodel collagen in the skin.

Treatment / Procedure

Skin is cleansed, then a topical anaesthetic cream (numbing cream) is applied to the skin. You’re good to go after about 45mins and you’re face will feel a little funny. The numbing cream makes the treatment much more comfortable.

A device such as a pen or roller with a series of small needles will be worked over the skin.

You can expect to see redness and bleeding. You shouldn’t feel much, you can feel that something is happening but it’s not painful.

It’s always dependant on the clients skin and what results are desired, but often you can expect to have 1 session every 6 weeks for 4 – 6 treatments. You can continue to see results up to 6-8 months after your last treatment. This is while your skins matrix regrows new collagen.

Things to remember

You are never going to smooth out the skin back to it’s original state. But we’re sure as hell gonna try and you can get up to 80% improvement in the skin. With scaring you’re looking at reducing the scaring by 1-2 grades

The treatment is not instant. like a cut the body takes time to heal. You are looking at anywhere from 3 weeks onwards to 6 months. In cases of treating scaring you’re looking at 6 months + so be patient.

Be careful with regards to needle length. Medical practitioners can use a much bigger needle depth such as 1.5mm. A therapist is only allowed up to 1mm on the face.

If you’re going to invest you need to look after your skin with a good regime and always apply sun protection. A good skincare regime supports what you’re doing in the salon at home.

After the treatment you will need to avoid makeup for up to 48 hours, use gentle, calming and hydrating products. Your skin will feel like it has sunburn. Avoid vitamin A and C products for 48hours as well as acid type products or abrasive scrubs.

As with anything this is only a guide and you should always carry out a full consultation with a qualified practitioner prior to having a treatment. It isn’t a case of one size fits all. Microneedling is available at Rachieroo Treatments.
