The Pig in the South Downs

The Pig is fast becoming one of those popular foodie over night UK stays and for good reason. They have some gorgeous properties with great food and are a great retreat for a day or two of relaxation. We are slowly working our way round the properties and recently visited the newest addition, Pig in the South Downs. I wrote about Kent here but it’s nice to have a peak round each to see which might suit you best.

Hotel and Grounds

The hotel consists on main house and their signature green house style restaurant. The restaurant has gorgeous views over the vineyard and rolling hills. Along with a collection of stable style buildings.

We had a stable building room this time, complete with roll top bath. It was perfect. Option on their website came under comfy luxe.

The grounds are well kept. Peaceful lawn to have drinks and relax on a lounger, whilst soaking in the views. Walled garden to potter around and nosey at all the home grown veggies. Vineyard and it’s tucked away with many walks surrounding.

Food

I think one of the reasons you go to the pig is for the food. After all they claim to be a restaurant with rooms. But It really is just an indulgent night away with more food and drink than you’re prepare to admit to consuming. We could criticise one or two dishes at the Kent property but had no complaints here. The menu has plenty on offer, not so much if you’re vegan or veggie. You can have small plates or larger plates on mix and match.

Although the food was better here I did love the pizza oven in the walled garden at Kent. It gave you an additional food option rather than just eating in the restaurant. The South Downs only has the one restaurant.

We enjoyed sitting in the bar before hand, there are is also a snug with open fire. Perfect for winter months. Delicious cocktails and olive and nut nibbles.

Breakfast is an additional charge. Buffet style and additional hot menu choices. We didn’t actually order from the menu, there is so much available on the buffet that you really didn’t need anything else. It almost felt a waste to order off the menu and leave the buffet. Breakfast price is a rate for buffet and additional cost for off the menu.

Treatments

Shock we didn’t actually have treatments this time. But I wanted to include it because it’s a nice addition to a stay and it’s something they offer. Treatment rooms are those cute potting shed style rooms in a lovely peaceful corner of the walled garden. I love how they stick to the hotel theme and from previous experience there treatments are great so I’m confident they would be good here too. There are no spa facilities and its very clear on the website that they are just treatment rooms. It does not detract from your experience in anyway.

We love The Pig and will continue to work our way round the properties. Let me know in the comments if you’ve been and what you thought.
